This work has established the Federation as an institution that promotes social, productive, environmental, educational and basic infrastructural development within coffee-producing regions.
The activities and programmes it has undertaken have earned the Federation national and international recognition as a leading, effective and transparent institution. Over the years, the Federation’s sustainability programmes have involved not only coffee producers and their communities, but also clients through alliances, various elements of the Colombian government at national, regional and local levels, and a number of international cooperation bodies. Thanks to its management abilities in the country’s rural areas, the Federation coordinates efforts and designs and manages innovative programmes that meet the needs of farmers in order to ensure sustainability.

Fairtrade means exactly what it says: fair trade. Introduced in the 1960s, Fairtrade certification represents an initiative that unites social responsibility, sustainability and competitiveness for small- and medium-sized producers. Fairtrade Labelling Organisations (FLO) is a non-profit commercial society that is based on social responsibility and which aims to ensure equity in international trade.
Fairtrade is a social movement, the stated aim of which is to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and to promote sustainable agriculture. It is based on three basic beliefs: first, the producers have the power to express unity with consumers. Second, current global trading practices promote the unequal distribution of wealth between nations. Finally, buying products at a fair price from producers in developing countries is a more efficient way to promote sustainable growth than traditional aid.
Certification operates as a chain in which everyone is certified, including the producer and industry, in such a way as to ensure the entire production chain follows the fair trade rules.
